Tony has given considerable thought to his teaching material and has decided on Mel Bay's Guitar Method which starts off in a clear manner with diagrams and at a sensible pace. This works well for these above average pupils. I am recommending Tony's timetable be increased at Fernhill whenever possible.
When I arrived, Tony was accompanying the pupil, who was having difficulty with the notes. The approach was very encouraging and the use of the metromone was helpful. The experience came across like a performance in spite of the technical difficulties.
The next pupil was late (mother had forgotten his lessons) so his lesson was somewhat shorter than usual. Nevertheless he was given help with technical detail on his study. Tony asked the pupil to count in and supported him by accompanying. The pupil was given plenty of detail to work on, with additional musical exmples explained and played for his benefit.
The link which Tony makes to music in general through the examples he performs, give pupils a sense of musical direction which is very valuable. They are also encouraged to be aware of different styles of playing and music from other cultures- all this through short musical examples in a short space of time! This pupil was set alternate note-picking for homework, appropriate support in this context.
